Lymphoma begins in lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. It may involve the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, or other organs. There are two broad groups — Hodgkin lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma — with many subtypes that behave and respond differently.
Even in advanced stages, lymphoma responds remarkably well to treatment. Hodgkin lymphoma is cured in most patients, and many aggressive Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are curable with modern chemo-immunotherapy.
Diagnosis requires a biopsy of an enlarged lymph node, examined by an experienced pathologist to identify the exact subtype. Staging is completed with blood tests, a bone marrow examination when needed, and imaging such as CT or PET-CT scans.
Most lymphomas are treated with chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy (such as rituximab for B-cell lymphomas), given in cycles — usually on a day-care basis. Radiation is added in selected cases. Treatment is planned to maximise cure while minimising long-term side effects.
