  • Right food can cure cancer

Presentation on Diet Modification to reverse aging, prevent and cure cancer, heart disease, diabetes and dementia at Ujjain District Legal Services Authority. Elite members of the Judiciary and District Administration graced the occasion including Honorable District Judge Shri Shyamkant Kulkarni, DIG Shri Manish Kapooria, Commisioner Shri Rishi Garg, Collector Shri Shashank Mishra and SP Shri Sachin Atulkar.
Nutrition and diet is now at the forefront of medicine. Now we are getting to answers about why we age, and how we can stop and reverse aging. I see a future where medicine as we know it will cease to function. We will be going back to basics.

  • Talk on Radio Mirchi Indore.

Spoke about how genetically modified foods are causing cancer. We modify the life style of our patients so that cancer does not come back. Breakthrough new treatments including immunotherapy are helping cure more cancers. Cancer treatment is increasingly becoming affordable with cheaper drugs widely available.

  • When the platelet count is wrong!

We have been getting patients referred to us for low platelet counts, and these are on the rise during the dengue epidemic currently going on. We will share two cases here: 1. Ms. J, pregnant 8 months was referred because she was found to have platelet counts of 20,000. We found that this was because her platelets were reacting to the EDTA chemical in blood collection tube and clumping. This was reported as a low count on the cell counting machine. When blood was checked without the EDTA her platelet count was 2,00,000. See the first two microscope images, first one with the clumping in the EDTA and second one without the clumping in absence of EDTA. 2. Baby D, 6 years old with dengue. Platelets reported 18,000. Again same phenomenon. Actual platelet count was 2,30,000 without EDTA. See the third image with platelet clumping in EDTA and the fourth one without the EDTA. This phenomenon is known as pseudothrombocytopenia and actually there is nothing wrong in the patient or their blood!

  • Why sugar is bad for your brain?

Sugar is bad for your brain! Researchers have found that high levels of fructose can cause disrupted insulin signaling in the brain, leading to cognitive defects and poor short term memory. However omega 3 fatty acids can couteract the harmful effects of fructose. These good acids are found in flax seeds, fish oil, and walnuts in good measure.

  • New hope in lung cancer!

At a time not so far ago, lung cancer was considered totally incurable and quickly fatal. As discussed at the meeting by leading lung cancer physicians from around the world, the scene has changed. Dr. Purvish Parikh commented in his presentation that the average five year survival rate of all lung cancers taken together is 27% now. Newer drugs and molecular targets are helping more and more patients. All tumors are now tested for mutations and up to half of all show genetic mutations. Most of these are effectively treated by targeted agents who do not have any of the side effects of chemotherapy. We are no longer shooting bullets in the dark. We saw the introduction of newer oral drugs way back in 2001 while I was doing my Fellowship at the Lung Cancer Unit, Evanston Hospital, Chicago. With the passage of time, the research has borne fruit. Long term survival with a good quality of life is becoming a reality now.

  • Winning over multiple myeloma!

Myeloma is a common form of blood cancer. Common features are fatigue, anemia, bone pains and kidney failure. (Please open up the album and click on the pictures for more information). The myeloma cells live and multiply in the bone marrow. They cause the bones to become weak and easily breakable. This leads to bone pains and particularly back pain. Myeloma should be suspected in all elderly patients with anemia and back pain. The treatment of myeloma has undergone a sea change over the past decade. Earlier chemotherapy drugs like Melphalan and Doxorubicin were the only ones available. But things are very different now.

  • Don't give platelets in dengue fever!

A study done in Singapore confirmed that giving platelets in dengue fever does not help. The platelet count does not show much change with giving of platelets. Infact, it was seen in the study that those patients who recieved platelets had a longer hospital stay and had more complications. Deaths in dengue fever occur but they normally do not occur due to bleeding. They occur due to multi organ failure which should be treated urgently.
Platelet transfusions on the other hand can cause serious side effects in a minority of the patients including acute lung injury which can be fatal.

  • What can we learn from kids ?

This kid broke into a dance on the completion of his cancer treatment right there in the hospital!
Kids are amazing and they make amazing patients too! I have consistently seen that kids go through their cancer treatments smoothly and get well so fast that you cannot even imagine! They dont carry any emotional baggage with them either.
It warms my heart to see those kids I treated for leukemia and other cancers 15-20 years back becoming bank managers, chartered accountants and engineers. The other day a charming lady walked into my office with a wedding invitation card. She was 6 years old when I treated her for acute leukemia 20 years ago!!
